It is a city that has retained its colonial charm due to its architecture and unique geographic location.
It was once the capital of Guatemala, but was abandoned after a series of earthquakes destroyed it.
Even though many structures have been rebuilt, there are still ruins from back in the 1700s.
This is the first location of the Universidad de San Carlos, the first university in Central America and one of the oldest in the world.
Ruins from one of the convents.
Being here, I felt that the reason this place is part of our Heritage is that it bears testimony of the encounter of Maya and Spanish cultures. It also witnesses of slavery, colonialism and other cultural aspects that have shaped the Latin American reality we see today. I was touched by the welcoming feelings, they colorful houses, the views and the majestic churches. I definitely felt as if I had been transported back to 400 years ago and was seeing the past before my eyes.
